In 2010, the City of Edmonton’s Ecological Footprint was 3.2 times greater than the world average. The leaders of the City saw this as a major issue and knew it needed to be addressed in The Way We Green (TWWG), the City of Edmonton’s environmental strategic plan.

On behalf of The Natural Step Canada, Pong Leung, a native Edmontonian, was invited to sit on the TWWG’s Expert Panel to help ensure that the plan had a science-based and rigourous foundation. This, in turn, led to a deeper engagement to help the City implement the plan internally, including a broad organizational governance and culture assessment, and a training workshop for managers. In July 2011, TWWG was official approved by Council.

The Way We Green has received the 2012 Environment Award from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) and the Government of Alberta’s 2012 Minister’s Award for Municipal Excellence in the category of Outstanding Achievement.
